Elias B. Browne, second son of Stephen C. and Mary E. Browne, was born December 9, 1829.  He grew to manhood on his father’s farm in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood, Washington County, and received his early education in the Pleasant Grove Academy, where he attended at intervals until his eighteenth year when he entered Centre College at Danville, remaining for the year and making substantial progress in his various studies.  He chose agriculture for his life work, and at the age of twenty-one engaged in farming two miles east of Springfield, where he has resided since 1851.  His farm, consisting of 355 acres of fine land, is one of the best stock farms in the county and as a successful raiser of stock, Mr. Browne has few equals in this part of Kentucky.  Mr. Browne was married April 4, 1855, to Miss Mary E. Thompson, daughter of James and Nancy (Litsey) Thompson, of Washington County.  The children born to this marriage are the following:  Jane D., wife of James Ewing; Nannie, wife of Newell McClosky; Stephen C. (deceased), William, James T., Elias B. (deceased), Lucy, Mary, Beverly, Jewett and Viola T. Browne.  Mr. Brown has never been an aspirant for official position and is conservative in politics, voting for the man, rather than party.  He and wife are active members of the Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, to which he has belonged since 1855, and in which he holds the position of elder.
