1808 Marriage of Giles Allegy and Betsy Southern

The Jesse Hill that is bondsman for this couple is my 3rd great-grandfather.  He married Jane Southern, also in 1808, and I am sure this Betsy Southern is her sister.  Perhaps the parents of the two girls were deceased, since Jesse gives oath of Betsy’s age, rather than having a parental consent.  Marriage bond is from Garrard County.

Know all men by these presents that we, Giles Allegy and Jesse Hill, do promise to pay Christopher Greenup, Esq., Governor of Kentucky, the sum of fifty pounds current money, the payment of which well and truly to be made unto the said Governor or his successors for the use of the Commonwealth.  We bind ourselves and each of our heirs, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, sealed and dated the 3rd day of May 1808.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there has been a license issued from the clerk’s office of Garrard County for a marriage intended between the above bound Giles Allegy and Betsy Southern; now should there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage then the above obligation to be void, else to remain in full force.

Giles Allegy, Jesse Hill

Test.  M. Letcher

Garrard County

This day Jesse Hill came before me, a Justice of the Peace for said county, and made oath that Betsy Southern is above the age of 21 years.  Given under my hand the 3rd day of May 1808.

John Ham, Justice of the Peace
