John Dawson and Susannah Moore 1799 Marriage Bond

Another old marriage bond to share with you today.  Notice the clerk wrote Virginia instead of Kentucky – and marked it out!  Kentucky had been a state for seven years!  This bond is from Madison County.

Know all men by these presents, that we, John Dawson and Thomas Clay, are held and firmly bound unto James Garrard, Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia Kentucky, in the just and full sum of fifty pounds, to which payment well and truly to be made to the said governor or his successors.  We bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, firmly by these presents, sealed and dated this 8th day of October 1799.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be had solemnized between the above bound John Dawson and Susannah Moore, both of Madison County.  If there be no lawful cause to obstruct the same the above obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force, power and virtue.

John Dawson, Thomas Clay
