Grandmother and Granddaughter

I adore this picture – the grandmother doesn’t look very pleasant, but perhaps she didn’t want her photo taken.  But the granddaughter steals the show, sitting on her riding horse reading a book, ribbon in her hair!  Grandmother’s book is on the floor, and a booklet or card in her lap.  Beautiful rocking chair.  A lovely example of by-gone days.

  1. Phyllis, Long time reader here and VERY appreciative of what you and Richie do.
Some months back you had an article about a massacre of 17 settlers by Indians around what is now Floyds Fork (My old brain is not always kind). Part of the clan were Wester????. Dutch I believe. The Brits paid the Indians $5 for each scalp. Former Lt Governor Steve Henry, a long time friend, is a descendant of the Westerf??? and would like to know more. I have not been able to locate the article. Would you help?
BTW, Steve’s wife, Heather French Henry, is a candidate for KY Secretary of State.

    • John, Westerfield was the name of the gentleman who was taking many of the Dutch settlers to Harrodsburg, but the massacre interrupted their journey. Steve and Heather were at the gathering Friday evening and he met us in Louisville when we took the bus tour. If you go to my blog type Westerfield massacre in the search box at the top of the page and it should come up. Let me know if this doesn’t work. Thanks for reading my articles!
