Marion County was formed from a portion of Washington County in 1834. John Hunt Morgan came through in July of 1863, during the Civil War, and burned the courthouse, destroying all records. Thus will books begin in 1863 for this county.
Stephen Huston Gartin married Sally G. Alstott April 2, 1832. They had at least the seven children listed in her will – Sally Ann, Mary Ann, Martha Ann, Rho Ann, Bettie Ann, Uriah and Stephen. The couple were buried in Old Liberty Cemetery, Bradfordsville, Marion County. Elizabeth Ann and Rho Ann’s death certificates list Stephen Huston and Sally Alstott as parents.

I Sally Gartin of the county of Marion and state of Kentucky, do hereby make this my last will and testament.
First. I will and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid.
Secondly. That my Negroes, and all other property of every description that may be left, after paying my just debts and funeral expenses, I hereby include all property that I may have at my death, together with debts that may be due to me at the time of my death, shall be sold and the proceeds divided into seven equal parts – one of these equal parts be given to each of my daughters namely: Sally Ann Averitt, Mary Ann Chandler, Martha A. Gartin, Rho Ann Hite and Bettie Ann Wray, to them and their children separate and apart from their husbands. That one seventh part be given to my son Stephen H. Gartin and one seventh part to be given to Sally Jane,
Bettie Ann and Mary Alice, infant children of my son Uriah Gartin, deceased. Lastly I constitute and appoint George W. Grundy executor of this my last will and testament. This 30th day of November 1861. The above was underlined by me and one third was marked out.

I, Sally Gartin, do hereby make this codicil to my last will and testament. I hereby authorize and direct my executor to give to my daughter Martha Ann, my buggy horse and buggy, over and above the rest of my heirs. Signed and sealed the 29th of September, 1862.

At a county court held for Marion County on the 7th day of September 1863, at the courthouse of said county, the above instrument of writing, purporting to be a true copy of the last will and testament of Sally Gartin, deceased, was produced in court and proven by the oaths of James M. Hidler, Clerk of Marion County Court, who testified to having viewed the original will, and George W. Grundy, to be a true copy of said last will and testament of said deceased. Thereupon the court award it to be rendered as such.
Whereupon the same and this certificate are truly recorded in my office this September 12, 1863
