I will admit that in writing this post I thought Barren was Warren County – Bowling Green!!! Funny how the mind plays tricks. Not that it matters, but when I tried to find where the cemetery might be located realized it was Barren, county seat Glasgow! The two counties are adjacent and perhaps that is why I may be forgiven for my error!
Daniel Stockton was the son of Newberry Stockton, 1743-1805, and Margaret Lattimore, 1747-1805, born in Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1769. Daniel died before April 24, 1800, in Barren County, Kentucky, where his will was brought to Court. Daniel and Susanna Sherer, his wife, were married in Bedford County, Virginia about 1798. From the will we know that Daniel and Susanna had two sons, Newberry and Hugh, and Susanna was pregnant with the third child, who is given a share of the estate if it survives. He did! Daniel Stockton was name for his father when he was born August 17, 1800 and died in Illinois, January 29, 1883.
In the 1810 Tax List for Barren County Susanna Stockton is listed with 100 acres of #3 rated land and four horses.
Francis Lattimore, mentioned in the will, is Daniel Stockton’s uncle, his mother’s brother. Thomas Stockton, who witnessed the will, is Daniel’s brother.

In the name of God amen. I, Daniel Stockton of Barren County and State of Kentucky, being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament. That is to say, principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hand of Almighty God that gave it me and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors. And as touching such worldly estate whereas it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.
First. I give and bequeath to Susanna Stockton, my dearly beloved wife, and Newberry, my eldest son, and Hugh Stockton, my youngest son, and the child my wife is now at this time pregnant with, if it should be born living, each of them an equal share of all and singular of my lands and tenements and all my estate by her and them freely to be possessed. I likewise constitute, make and ordain my wife Susanna Stockton, the sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament, with the reserve that Francis Lattimore is to see there’s nothing or no part of said estate destroyed or put to other use then for her of their support, or if it appears to the said Lattimore that said Susanna, my wife, is extravagant with said estate or putting it to every other use than for the lawful support of herself and the children as can make it appear by testimony then the said Lattimore is to be my Executor and make an equal division as above said. Lattimore is to see that said children are educated and that shall be brought up in a virtuous line of life or if my wife Susanna Stockton shall marry, then said Lattimore is also to be my Executor and make such division as is above directed and take such children and do by them as he thinks is most to their advantage and also that said Susanna’s share of said estate to return to the above children at her decease.

I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other former will and testament, legacies, bequests and executors by me in anywise before mentioned willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of April in the year 1800.
Daniel Stockton, his mark
