1789 Will of Thomas Noell

Scan002In the name of God, Amen.  I, Thomas Nowell, of Mercer County, Virginia, being weak of body and in perfect mind and memory, thanks be to almighty God, calling to mind the mortality of man and knowing it is for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament.  That is to say, principally and first of all I give and surrender my soul into the hand of almighty God that giveth and my body I recommend to the earth, to be buried in a Christian-like manner at the discretion of my executor, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection shall receive the same again by almighty power of God and taking suit worldly estate to herewith it has pleased God to bless me in life, I give, demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.  I give and bequeath to my dear and well beloved wife Druscilla, for her a peaceful enjoyment on it and a living for the duration of her widowhood, all my lands, Negroes, household furniture and stock of all kinds and everything I now possess, and if she should die before the children all come of age then those that are not of age are to be raised on the said estate and after all become of age then the balance that remains to be equally divided amongst them all – Elizabeth, Garnett, Musker, John, Ann, Nancy, Lettie, Berry, Beckey, Moses, Tabby

and Sally, to them, my loving children.  If my wife Druscilla should marry she is to be entitled to a child’s part.  It is my will and desire that John Chiles, Sr., Druscilla, my wife, and Garnett Noell should be executors to this my estate.

It is my desire that if there be any mistake in this my will the executors to rectify it.

At a Court held for Mercer County at Harrodsburg on the 23rd day of June, 1789.

This last will and testament of Thomas Noell, deceased, was produced into Court and proved by the oaths of David Chiles, Henry Chiles and Elizabeth Chiles, three subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
