Augustine Ward is my 6th great-grandfather. I do not know his birth date, but he died between March 17, 1777, when he signed his will, and May 31, 1777, when his will was entered into court. He lists eight children – John, two single daughters – Elizabeth and Susanna, Ignatius, daughters Milliford Howard, Juliana Elder (my ancestor), Agnes Speake and deceased daughter Mary Hudson, who left three children.
Juliana Ward, 1737-1814, married Charles Elder, 1730-1804, son of William Elder and Ann Wheeler. Their daughter Mary Ann Elder married Charles Montgomery and about 1793 moved to Washington County, Kentucky.
Since a son is named John and a daughter is named Agnes, I believe Augustine Ward to be the son of John and Agnes Ward. John died in 1733 leaving estate to son Acallis (possibly Achilles?) called Ward’s Addition, adjoining a tract of land that John Ward lived on called Charles Town. John Ward named one son, Acallis (possibly Achilles), and son-in-law Simon Smith, in his will, no other children are listed. ‘I give and bequeath all the rest of my moveable estate to Agnes, my loving wife, during her widowhood and at the day of her marriage or at her death to be equally divided amongst the rest of my children that are not here named.’ Agnes Ward lived another 20 years, dying in 1754.

That document is absolutely beautiful! As you know most folks did not write. You are so blessed to have this piece of your past made visible for you. People really took care of their own back then. OR, totally disowned them. Thank you so much for sharing this.
You are very welcome! I love finding these pieces of history and sharing with others!
Have you utilized familysearch.org/labs “full-text” search feature? I do a lot of Charles County MD research and the names Augustine Ward and Achilles Ward pop up often in depositions and land records. I think you could confirm Augustine’s parents with records: I’ll attach a few: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C914-GWFM-T ;
Augustine and Akilles are listed as “kin” on the admin of John Ward, Agnes administratrix. Kin follows a pattern–if John was single these would be brothers (if no brothers, then sisters, or other relatives); if John had children, then his sons would be kin first, then sisters, then siblings then further relatives. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C397-5337-W BUT…there are court records available at Maryland online archives that have depositions and I know I just read one naming John Ward and Augustine and it explained their connections–I am a McAtee descendant, thus my interest here: Depositions about Charles Towne: https://mdhistory.msa.maryland.gov/msaref01/msa_sc_5458_12_3666/cr34670/html/cr34670-0270.html I hope the links work. dmnor10@yahoo.com
You have made my day! What a great resource. I have looked at various resources on Family Search, but did not know of ‘full-text’ searches. Thank you very much!!
