Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church – Old Cemetery – Marion County

My newest book, Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church – Old Cemetery, is available on Amazon as of today. This book was started a year or so ago and in the midst of moving I forgot it! The book includes color photographs of all the gravestones in the old cemetery, those early pioneers that came from Maryland to the Rolling Fork River area of Kentucky in 1790. Revolutionary War soldiers included John Barton Abell, Henry Hudson Wathen and Benedict Spalding. Some of the stones were broken over the years and those have been place in a concrete slab at the top the hill.

Family names include Abell, Bland, Byrnes, Caffey, Charlton, Elder, Ewing, Forrest, Hamilton, Hardesty, Hayden, Johnson, Kavanaugh, Knott, Lee, Luckett, Macken, Mattingly, Merimee, Newcomb, Raley, Reichley, Rene, Reney, Roberts, Ryan, Simms, Spalding, Thomas, Wathen and Wimsatt. There are 71 photos of gravestones.

The older cemetery, as I mentioned, is at the top of a small knoll. The newer cemetery is below it.

  1. Hi Phyllis,

That’s exciting news. We try hard to not do anything on Sunday to honor the Sabbath, so I have to wait till the morning to order the book. The Amazon page is open in another tab just waiting.

That area around there was my great-grandfather’s farm. My mom was raised there. I remember playing around there when it was mostly just weeds and bushes, with a bit of broken-down iron fencing here and there.

    Thanks for your hard work.

  2. My mother’s side is from Lebanon (Thomas) and Calvary (Abell). My father’s side is from Springfield (Smith) and Fredericksburg (Mudd). I forwarded this article to a cousin living, guess where Maryland (where it all stared). His wife has been working on it for 20+ years.

  3. Thanks Phyliss
I will pass this on to a Calvary family I know. I have never been to the Calvary Cemetery. Maybe this summer. The picture is so beautiful.

  4. Great to see you finished this project. As you well know I am a Hamilton and many of my ancestors are buried in that cemetery. I look forward to getting this book. Thank you for your wonderful contributions that help so many trace their ancestors.
