Mrs. Mary Alford, Obituary

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Crow Coulter Alford is my great-grandmother.  She was born in September of 1856 to James Mansfield Crow and Nancy Jane Coulter, in Washington County, Kentucky.  Mary Elizabeth married George F. Coulter March 26, 1874.  They had 10 children:  Levi A., Cecilia A., Sarah L., Will M., Speed D., Emeline, George W., Nannie Bell (my grandmother!), Mattie M. and Prentice.  After George died around 1904, Mary Elizabeth married Granville Alford.  She died April 4, 1940, in Marion County, Kentucky.

Mrs. Mary Alford, 79, Dies At Home of Daughter Here

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Alford, about 79 years old, died Saturday morning shortly after 9 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Gribbins, on North Street, of complications.  Following her death, the body was removed to the Bosley Funeral Home where it remained until Sunday afternoon when funeral services were conducted at 2 o’clock at the grave in Ryder Cemetery by the Rev. T. J. Porter, pastor of the Lebanon Baptist Church.

Mrs. Alford was the daughter of the late Jim Crow and the widow of Granville Alford, whose death occurred about a year ago.  surviving her are four daughters and three sons by a previous marriage.  They are Mrs. Charles Gribbins, Mrs. Jack Hill, Mrs. Jesse Hill and Mrs. Maude Hudson; Will and Prentice Coulter, all of this city, and Speed Coulter of Indiana.  she is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Elsie Case of Anderson County.
