There are several missing will books at the Stafford County Courthouse. The only surviving evidence for any of these wills, administrations, inventories, etc., is from the old index books. Fortunately these indexes exist! There are several Linton wills during this time period – John Linton, grandfather of my Captain John Linton, and Moses Linton, brother to John, both died in 1730. There are also Mason and Harrison wills which are of interest to me. Martin Scarlett and wife Anne Green Scarlett also died during this time period and left wills – Anne was the grandmother of John Linton’s wife – and much of the property from both Martin and Anne Scarlett came through to John Linton. Giles and Rawleigh Travers wills are included in this list – no close relation, but just interesting people! These few sheets were sent to me years ago by my dear friend and genealogist, Dorothy Thrawley! They are from Tyler’s Quarterly Magazine. Dorothy was passionate about genealogy and was the best of researchers! How I miss her. In the next day or so I will post about some of these wills that were found in the Tayloe papers. Copies were made and kept – how wonderful for us! Let me know if you are descended from any of the following:

GREAT artical, if you need any help at the Stafford Court House, I live about 14 miles away.
Thank you, Terry! I’ll keep that in mind! My John Linton, who married Anne Barton, lived in Stafford. Other than his will I don’t know that much about him. He had a brother, Moses, who died in the same year – 1730.
From Dottie Porter Himes, these are my list, William Fenwick, John Gardiner, Frances & Robert Howson, John and Moses Linton, All the Masons, Robert Moseley, all the Newtons, Jacob,& John Porter, John& William Russell, John Scott, Robert Taliaferro, John Thomas, Giles & Rawleight Travers,Capt John Washington, thanks in advance. body{font-size:10pt;font-family:arial,sans-serif;background-color:#ffffff;color:black;}p{margin:0px;}Phyllis – when I looked at this list, I was struck by the significant number of deaths prior to 1700. So, I got curious to see how many surnames might be common to the early Jamestowne Colony colonists who are on the list of “qualified ancestors” on the Jamestowne Society site.Attached is a list of those common surnames between the two. There would probably be 3 to 4 generations between the Jamestowne colonists and – assuming they were descendants – someone who died before 1700.I’ve become rather interested in Jamestowne lately as I just submitted my final application for membership their last week. It was “an experience” to put together proof for a line over 13 generations without being able to use the recognition by other societies such as SAR or DAR. But, I believe they should be persuaded with what I have provided them. Time will tell.Ron Klein
I’m so excited for you – to become a member of the Jamestown Society will be incredible! Unfortunately none of the names you listed are my ancestors. My closest possibility would be Nicolas Martiau – he came about 1634 – probably too late!
The Stafford County wills I’d be interested in knowing more about would be the Goin/Gowing entries. (Not sure which one/ones as I haven’t nailed that line down back that far. The most common spelling in more recent generations has been Gowin, but sometimes Gowan or Gowen, but never with a “g” at the end. From what you wrote, it sounds like only the indexes exist…? (But, not the actual wills or probate records?) We have some of the Tyler’s Quarterlies here at work (SAR Library) that I could also check. Ironically, I was looking into my Gowin line this morning!! (Goofing off a bit!) Thanks for any info you can share!

I am a descendant of Thomas Watts. Do you have any information?
Hello,
Amos Shadburn is my fifth great grandfather. Please let me know how I can go about getting a copy of the will on record.
Thanks so much,
Lynda Shadburn Howard
This is a wonderful site you have made ! I wonder if you know if the will of John Sprye is available or only in and index now? I am trying to trace the Sprye , Robinson and Spraborough families from Stafford Co., in early 1700’s.
Keep up the great work. Your site is well designed and interesting !
I am related to John Peake
How may I obtain a copy of his will to Mary?
Thank for all of your time and efforts
Yes, looking for the will of Patrick Murray you have listed in Stafford County, dec’d 1730–will. You can email me at tiderow@yahoo.com. Have another researcher working on this. Jean
I’m sorry, I don’t have a copy of that particular will. You can try searching the collections at the Library of Virginia, http://www.lva.virginia.gov. I found copies of my Linton and Barton wills in the Tayloe Papers, and the library was kind enough to make copies for me.
Hi! I am looking for the will of Daniel Hankins, dec’d. 1693. If you could send it to me I would be greatly appreciative! My email is chris@pointchurch.com. Thanks so much!
Amos Shadburn is my husband’s 7x great grandfather. How can I go about getting a copy of his will? I am hoping it will give me some insight about the family. Thanks!
Unfortunately this is a list of wills that have been lost. At least we have the index that tells who died during this time period.
I’m curious about the William Overall you have on the list. Is there any further will information on him, or is this only an Index listing? thx
Gena, this is just a list. The will book was lost years ago. I did find copies of some of my family in the Tayloe papers housed at the Virginia Historical Society (I believe that is correct). I ordered copies.
I would love to know if this Daniel Hankins is related to me. I just found through my uncle’s DNA that we are not part of the Capt Daniel Hankins line nor part of the line I have been researching since my father’s death. I know we are related to a Joseph Hankins born 1752-1822 and hoping this Daniel could be a key.
