I have a very special photo to share with you today! I found this at an antique shop in Lewisburg, West Virginia, last month on our way to Nag’s Head, North Carolina. We stopped at The Stardust Cafe. If you are ever in the area it is definitely the place for lunch – great sandwiches and salads with a not-so-common touch! And wonderful baked bread – we took a loaf of sesame with us – delicious!
In an antique store across the street from the cafe, this jewel of a photo stole my heart! A sweet little girl surrounded by her dolls, with their little chairs and quite impressive bed! On back of the photo is written, “For Uncle Webb. Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, December 23, 1889.’
Doesn’t the little girl have beautiful hair? She is dressed in the norm of the day, down to her boots. It is quite unusual to have dolls from the period in a photo – at least this many! There is even a small train car beside the chair of the boy doll. The doll she holds must be her favorite – perhaps she is the owner of the bed – the trim on the skirt of her dress and that of the bed cover seem to match. There are two dolls in the chair on the left.
The photo was taken by Rundell in Sherburne, New York.
