Gethsemani Abbey Cemetery

Gethsemani Abbey is one of the most peaceful places on earth. Just driving onto the property makes life seem just a little slower and calmer. Gethsemani Abbey was begun in 1848 by the Trappist-Cistercian monks, who were founded in France in 1098. The abbey and its inhabitants are noted for prayer, labor and silence. It is located in the southern part of Nelson County, Kentucky, between the small towns of New Haven and New Hope. This area of the county, Pottinger’s Creek, was settled by Catholics that migrated from Saint Mary’s County, Maryland, in 1785. It is still a very Catholic community.

In front of the Abbey of Gethsemani is the public cemetery, where those who lived close to the abbey have been buried since the early 1800’s. I have photographed all the stones and will have a CD available shortly.

Joseph Robert Hagan 1901-1985 and Margaret Fenwick had a daughter Rose Ellen Hagan birth date unknown who married a Mr. Shannon. Do you know if John Shannon is related to her?
FYI, for those who do not know, Rosalie Spalding 1817-1893 was the wife of William Jerome Head 1811-1880.

This project is dear to me because my fifth great-grandfather, Captain John Linton, helped build this church. Many of my Linton, Moran and Edwards family members are buried here. Also, many of the early settlers of Washington County were laid to rest here. In a more modern happenstance, my husband’s father was minister of this church in the early 1960’s. Kindle Book – Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church Cemetery Photos – Old Cemetery – $8.29

Thank you for purchasing this book. There are two parts to the cemetery of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church – the old part is where the original settlers, the older people, were buried. This part is rather small. The newer part is much larger. Only the older cemetery is included in this book. There is a path up the hill from the new cemetery to the old cemetery, at the top of which is a monument in concrete which includes pieces of broken stones. What a wonderful way to display them – and so much better than throwing them away! This book includes photos of all the stones in the older part of the cemetery, and some from the new, a total of 70 names. Included are photos of the pathway, monument stones, church and historical marker.
