This is one of my finds from the Washington County Clerk’s office on the 10th! Samuel McElroy is most likely related to the McElroy family I wrote about on the 11th. Notice that Hugh McElroy is bondsman – quite possibly the elder Hugh McElroy mentioned in the article. You can check it out here.
The original is rather difficult to read. The following is a translation:
Know all men by these presents that we Samuel McElroy, Junr., and Hugh McElroy are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency the Governor of Kentucky in the sum of fifty pounds current money to the payment of which well and truly to be made to the said governor and his successors we bind ourselves, our heirs, etc., jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals and dated this 21st day of May, 1796. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended between the above bound Samuel McElroy, Junior, and Mary Wilson, for which a license has issued, now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage then this obligation to be void or else to remain in full force. Witness:
Samuel McElroy and Hugh McElroy
Consent:
Sir, please to grant marriage license to Samuel McElroy and Mary Wilson as i have freely given consent, given under my hand this 16th May, 1796.
