This list can only be one of the 7 pages of Marion Co., KY births for 1852. I was looking at page 1 this evening for one reason and stumbled across a completely different morsel. Seven lines up from the bottom was Malinda Dollin born 20 April 1852, daughter of my great great grandparents, James Dollin (Dowling) & Mary Jane Mattingly. I have scant records on her and this one is special. As you pointed out above, the location of the home birth is noted. In my particular case, I now know that the second property purchased by my great-great-great grandfather, James Dowling, Revolutionary veteran of the MD Line, 2nd Regiment. Malinda was born near Hawkin’s Mill in Marion Co., Kentucky.
I have a reference to this property as a land title but this is so much more. James Dowling bought property on Cartwright and Hardins creeks. Hawkin’s Mill didn’t run off of solar or wind power, it was powered by one of the creeks or one of the wonderful springs that fed it. The mill must sit on the water power source.
I started “googling” this tonight. There is an Old Mill School and there are Old Mill Days of celebration in Marion Co., Kentucky. This all references something relating to Hawkin’s Mill. Anyone that can further this query, “where was Hawkin’s Mill prior to its likely destruction in 1863?”.
I love stumbling across something else when actually looking for a particular fact! During the summer between my senior year of high school and first year of college I worked for our public library in Marion County. One of my jobs was to type another copy of The History of Marion County by a Mr. Proctor, I think! At the time I thought it terribly boring – to type! – but did enjoy the history! Except I can’t remember everything he wrote! Perhaps there might be something about Hawkin’s Mill. Next time I visit the library I will check – I also have a couple of things to find in that history! I should have paid more attention while typing, but that was 37 years ago! I was already interested in genealogy at that time, but was more preoccupied with getting names and dates – rather than stories and such! I wish I had a copy!
