Benedict Elder Montgomery was born 220 years ago – October 16, 1792 – in Charles County, Maryland. Benedict was the son of Charles Montgomery and Mary Ann Elder. He married Bibiana Wight in 1817 in Washington County, Kentucky. Benedict and Bibiana had 14 children: Elizabeth Jane, Rosella, Isabella Catherine, James William, Mary Lettie, Julia Ann, Margaret Ellen, Martha Frances, Charlest Thomas, Hetty Ann, Richard, Susan Mary, Emily Polin and Ann Catherine Montgomery.

Benedict Elder Montgomery is my 3th Great Grand Uncle. He was born in Fredrick Co., Maryland along with most of his siblings except those later ones that were born in Washington Co., KY. after his parents came to KY about 1795. Benedict’s wife was from Charles Co., Maryland, but met and were married in Washington Co., KY. I am related to Benedict Elder Montgomery, by his brother, William Peter Montgomery who married Mary Yates in Washington Co., KY. My mother was a MONTGOMERY, and her mother was a YATES. Carl R.   I, too, am descended from William Peter Montgomery and Mary Yates – through their son, William Peter Montgomery, Jr. His son, Robert E. Lee Montgomery, who married Frances Barber Linton, are my great-grandparents.

This project is dear to me because my fifth great-grandfather, Captain John Linton, helped build this church. Many of my Linton, Moran and Edwards family members are buried here. Also, many of the early settlers of Washington County were laid to rest here. In a more modern happenstance, my husband’s father was minister of this church in the early 1960’s. Who knew we would share this common piece of history? Included is an alphabetical listing of those buried at Pleasant Grove, including birth and death dates, and sometimes additional information. Kindle Book – Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church Cemetery Photos – Old Cemetery – $8.29

Thank you for purchasing this book. There are two parts to the cemetery of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church – the old part is where the original settlers, the older people, were buried. This part is rather small. The newer part is much larger. Only the older cemetery is included in this book. There is a path up the hill from the new cemetery to the old cemetery, at the top of which is a monument in concrete which includes pieces of broken stones. What a wonderful way to display them – and so much better than throwing them away! This book includes photos of all the stones in the older part of the cemetery, and some from the new, a total of 70 names. Included are photos of the pathway, monument stones, church and historical marker.
