Capt. S. J. Preston, aged 67 years, died Sunday at his home near Ebenezer after suffering for sometime from a complication of diseases arising from heart trouble. He was one of the most widely known river men, having been a pilot and captain on Kentucky river boats for the past forty years. He was a splendid gentleman, popular with all who knew him and was held in the highest esteem, and had a host of friends among steam boat people. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at Ebenezer church, Rev. S. H. Jones officiating, and the interment was in the near by cemetery. Besides his wife, Capt. Preston is survived by six children, Messrs. John and Ernest Preston; Mrs. C. C. Crawford, Mrs. Leslie McMurray, Mrs. Handy and Mrs. W. O. Roberts, all of Mercer county.
