Leon Edward Butler and Amanda Swanson Butler – Logan County

Leon Edward Butler, 1865-1944.  Amanda Swanson Butler, 1871-?.  Maple Grove Cemetery, Logan County, Kentucky.

Leon Edward Butler’s obituary was easily found in the News Democrat and Leader, Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky, in the September 21, 1944, newspaper.  However there was none to be found for wife Amanda Swanson Butler.  Perhaps she remarried after Leon’s death?

In 1910 the couple were living in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  Leon was 45, had been married 19 years, was born in Mississippi, his father in Georgia and his mother in Massachusetts.  His wife Amanda was 39, had given birth to one child and had one living.  Daughter Amanda was 15.

According to the Illinois death certificate for Leon Butler his parents were John C. Butler and Mollie Whitney.

There was an engagement announcement for the couple.  November 22, 1891, in The Owensboro Messenger, almost 53 years to the day of his death announcement.  Amanda and her sister, Stella Brooks Swanson, had a double wedding on September 30, 1891.  Unfortunately Leon Butler’s name was written as ‘Buckner’.
