Samuel R. White and Martha Lewis are my third great-grandparents. They married in Washington County, Kentucky, March 22, 1827, and lived there until shortly after this deed was signed. They moved to Parke County, Indiana, before 1870 where they appeared in the census records. I could find no burial information. If anyone has information about their death I would love to hear from you.

Notice Martha’s father, John Lewis, signed the marriage bond.
Martha and Samuel had twelve children:
- Elisha White, March 24, 1828 – September 24, 1906. Married Elizabeth Armstrong, March 4, 1847, in Washington County.
- Emeline White, (my ancestor), June 23, 1829 – February 25, 1912. Married William Coulter, April 26, 1851, in Washington County.
- John L. White, 1831 – May 15, 1864, Andersonville Prison, Sumter County, Georgia. Married Margaret Whitten August 15, 1853, in Washington County.
- William White, 1836 – before 1870. Married Elizabeth Doke, July 18, 1858, in Washington County.

- Nathaniel White, April 8, 1852 – ? In 1860 Washington County Census with parents, aged 8.
Just this moment realized Samuel Riley White was in the Civil War! I knew his son John fought and died at Andersonville Prison. The Muster-in Roll gives Samuel’s age as 53, September 22, 1862, and the Muster-out Roll as 56, July 13, 1864. He was listed as sick in November and December 1862 – could he have been wounded at Perryville? This will be continued in a later blog! Father and son were in the Eleventh Kentucky Cavalry, Company D, Privates. Son-in-law William Coulter was also held at Andersonville Prison, released and was killed on the Steamship Sultana when it exploded.
