Note – I started this post Sunday morning but became involved in getting drivers’ licenses and car tag – among other things!

Good Sunday morning!  We had rain overnight, but the clouds are starting to roll away.  I can see blue skies peeking through.  Leaving are falling – one of the reasons fall is my favorite time of the year.  Yesterday was in the 80’s – summertime in the Upper Peninsula – but will be 60ish this week.  Time for a cemetery expedition!

Today we visit Ballard County, not quite the furthest west, that title goes to Fulton County (south of Ballard), but one of the four most western counties, north to south – Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman and Fulton.

Ballard County has the Ohio and Mississippi rivers bordering its north and west sides, the two coming together just above the town of Wickliffe, the county seat. 

The county was created from portions of Hickman and McCracken counties.  It was named for Bland Ballard, a Kentucky pioneer and soldier who fought in the War of 1812.  The county seat was first at Blandville. 

A fire February 17, 1880, destroyed the courthouse and most of the records.  In 1882 the county seat was transferred from Blandville to Wickliffe, the current courthouse constructed from 1900 to 1905.  Wickliffe is on the Mississippi River and is a convenient shipping route for goods.
