Trip to Richmond Cemetery – Madison County

Yesterday was a gorgeous Kentucky fall day – brilliant blue skies, sunshine and perfect temperature. Ritchey and I felt it could not be wasted opening more boxes so we headed to Madison County and the beautiful Richmond Cemetery. We stopped at the cemetery office to get a map and had an interesting conversation with the ladies. One was a genealogist who helps the cemetery search for descendants of those who purchased lots to bury their loved ones but all lots were not used. This sounds fascinating, and a bit daunting at the same time! I concentrated on Section A, Ritchey on Section B. But, of course, at the end I darted throughout looking for particular graves. One of the most interesting was that of Captain James Estill.

Unfortunately the sun was at the back of the monument, making it difficult to see the face of the statue of Capt. James Estill.
‘Erected by C. R. Estill and brothers, children of Wallace Estill, to the memory of their grandfather, Capt. James Estill; a native of Virginia and one of the earliest settlers of this county., who was killed in battle with a party of Wyandotte Indians at Little Mountain, Kentucky, the present site of Mt. Sterling. March 22, 1782, aged 31 years, 4 months and 13 days.’

The following was taken from the Stanford, Kentucky, newspaper The Semi-Weekly Interior Journal of March 21, 1902.

We took about 340 photos – more to be shared with you!
