Isaiah Hill & Lydia Ann Ross Gravestone

Isaiah Hill and Lydia Ann Ross are my great-grandparents.  Isaiah was the son of Isaiah Hill and Lucy Murphy, born in Garrard County, Kentucky in 1838 – not the 1830 that is listed on his gravestone!  Lydia was the daughter of William Ross and Martha Lay of Washington County, Kentucky.

Isaiah and Lydia were married in Washington County May 4, 1870.  Isaiah was a Union soldier during the Civil War, fought in many battles and contracted small pox a few days before he was to muster out.  This deprived him of sight in one eye and his hearing also deteriorated.

The two were married for 49 years before Isaiah’s death September 10, 1919.  They had 10 children:  William Taylor, Randall, Rutherford B. Hays, Lucy Jane, John Garfield, Elizabeth Ann, Isaiah, Louisa, Alphie – and, my grandfather, Jessie Delbert Hill.

After Isaiah died in 1919, Lydia lived on for eleven years.  She was buried next to Isaiah in Evergreen Cemetery, Willisburg, Washington County, Kentucky.
