Thomas Lee and Frances Gibbs Crumbaugh Obituaries – McCracken County

While visiting Paducah, McCracken County, we visited Mt. Kenton Cemetery. Two of the stones we photographed are those of Thomas Lee Crumbaugh and his wife, Frances Gibbs.

Thomas Crumbaugh was the son of George Chaimers Crumbaugh and Alice Mills, born April 7, 1872. Thomas’ brother John was four years older. Their mother Alice died in 1874, while both children were very young. George Crumbaugh married Evaline Parker in 1875 and had four children – Alice P., George, Margery and Katie. This family is represented in the 1880 and 1900 census of McCracken County.

Thomas Crumbaugh married Frances Gibbs about 1894, probably in Tennessee since Frances was born there May 28, 1872, the daughter of John Preston Gibbs and Elizabeth Bowers. The couple had four children – Lee S., born in 1895; Frank B., born in 1898, Robert C., born in 1901 and Alice E., born in 1903.

In 1910 we find this family in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, where Thomas was the superintendent of the South Export Company. According to the 1913 City Directory for Meridian, Mississippi, Thomas and family lived at 1913 Meridian. In the 1930 census they live in Memphis, Tennessee at 2069 Herbert Avenue. In that year son Frank, his wife Eleanor and grandson Frank, Jr., live with Thomas and Frances.

The next year Thomas Crumbaugh dies of kidney problems. His body is brought back to Paducah for burial. The following obituary says he will be buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, but he is buried at Mt. Kenton Cemetery.
