This Lyne family married into my Duncan family who moved from Loudoun County, Virginia, to Nelson County, Kentucky.  Coleman Duncan, born c. 1742, married Mary Lyne, daughter of Thomas Lyne and Mary Sandford.  His daughter Mary Duncan married Timothy Lyne 1808 in Nelson County – they lived in Logan County, Kentucky.  Timothy’s brother Thomas Lyne lived in Woodford County.

LYNE FAMILY

About the year 1650 Thomas Lyne, said to have been of Welsh origin, the ancestor of the Lyne family now residents of Jessamine County, Kentucky, with his brother, Henry, emigrated from Bristol, England, and settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia.  He had a son, Thomas, who married a Mary Edwards, of Virginia, and he also had a son named Thomas, who married a Mary Sandford.  He had nine children, of whom one was a Thomas, and he married Mary Pagit, of Virginia, who died in 1812 (his death occurring about 1804).  He was a blacksmith by trade, and conducted his business in connection with the hotel business on the Winchester and Alexandria (Virginia) road.  He had seven children:  James, Robert, Thomas, Timothy, William, Sandford and Naomi (Mrs. Reuben Settle).  Thomas Lyne, the fourth, was born March 26, 1783, in Loudoun County, Virginia, subsequently settled in Woodford County, Kentucky, and engaged in farming and the blacksmithing business.  He married Mary Connelley, daughter of Sandford and Mary (Ramey) Connelley, natives of Virginia.  He died in 1848, she in 1870.  They had eleven children:  Sandford, Nancy (Mrs. David Williams), Mary (Mrs. Elijah Neal), William, Daniel, Matilda (Mrs. John S. Duncan), Thomas, Martha (Mrs. Joseph A. Gaines), Elizabeth (Mrs. S. P. Hendricks), James and Fannie (Mrs. George W. Goode).  William, the fourth child, was born March 7, 1813, and married Margaret Jane Kay, of Fayette County, who died September 29, 1884, leaving six children:  Mary E. (Mrs. Dr. W. A. Smith), Nannie, William, Sandford, Mattie (Mrs. John D. Wooley) and Jennie (Mrs. Lucian L. Smith, of Texas).  William Lyne was reared and educated in the common schools, and at the age of twenty-three engaged with his brother in the manufacture of hemp.  In 1851 he and his brother purchased the homestead property in Woodford County, containing 300 acres.  The partnership remained unbroken for forty-five years, and was only terminated by the death of his brother, which occurred in 1883.  During the Civil War Sandford was in the quartermaster’s department of General Haws’ division, and in 1866 he was elected county judge for Woodford, which position he filled for four years.  Mr. Lyne is the owner of some 700 acres of land, and makes his home in the summer with his daughter, Mrs. John Wooley, and his son, Sandford, spending his winters with his daughter, Mrs. L. L. Smith, of Texas.  He is a member of the Baptist Church.  Sandford C. Lyne, son of William and Margaret (Kay) Lyne, was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, October 15, 1850; was reared on the homestead, and educated in common schools.  In 1878 he purchased a farm containing 213 acres situated at Windom, Jessamine County, and is engaged in farming, and raising thoroughbred horses for racing, and is also engaged at Windom, in connection with his cousin, William Lyne, in the produce business.  He married, in 1874, Miss Ida Farra, daughter of B. F. Farra, of Jessamine County.  They have six children:  Lillie F., Jennie Kay, Frank F., Ida W., Willie and Lucina L.  William D., the third child of William and Margaret (Kay) Lyne, was born June 23, 1847, in Woodford County, married Miss Rena Cleveland, daughter of George Cleveland, of Jessamine County, and has three children:  Irene, George and Clarence.
