One of my many original marriage bonds from Washington County, Kentucky. Love to see the old handwriting.
Know all men by these presents that we, Richard Ray and Absalom Ray, are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency, the Governor of Kentucky, in the sum of fifty pounds current money, to the payment of which well and truly to be made to the said Governor and his successors. We bind ourselves, our heirs, and jointly and severally, firmly, by these presents, sealed with our seals and dated this 30th day of March 1793. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Richard Ray and Susanna Royal, for which a license has issued. Now, if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage, then this obligation to be void, else to remain in full force.
Richard Ray Absalom Ray
Witness John Reed
Sir, please to grant license for marriage for my daughter Susanna Royal and Richard Ray by order of me, this being my hand and seal. James Royal. To Mr. Reed, Clerk of Washington County, March 30, 1793. Witnesses: Henry Hollane, Benjamin Ray

This is wonderful. Hope springs eternal that you may find Joseph Spencer and Louis Ray marriage bond. Someone sent me a photo copy but it is impossible to read. Very thick handwriting at that time at the Washington County Clerks office. April of 1825. But this particular bond also belongs in our family history. Can you imagine having to pay to get your child married? We do now but in a different way. How much was 50 pounds in those days I wonder? Thank you Phyllis. Patty

Thank you for posting this .. it’s part of my Ray family history.
Would this be the Benjamin Ray listed in a 1959 DAR report among the children of John b1707 and Sarah Wilson as having been born in 1739? A Benjamin Ray was in the US Census for 1810 in Warren County KY as 45+.
Patrick Dolan: I have Benjamin Ray 7 Nov 1739 Frederick Co., MD-25 Mar 1819 Allen Co., KY. married to Mary Rawlings. I have his parents as John & Sarah Wilson Ray.
Allen Co., KY. website Deed book abstract Book B 1818-1819 p 250-299 giving son James one negro boy named Peter prior to his moving to Missouri. I also believe this Benjamin was father to my William Ray 21 Dec 1778 Frederick Co., MD.-7 Jun 1841 Allen Co., KY.
How are you related?
Lynn
Hi, Lynn. This is the one in question. I’m not sure I’m related to him at all, but am seeking a father for my John Ray (who m Verlinda Swearingen of Montgomery Co MD), b 1765-1784, who went to Warren Co KY and last to Howard Co MO, dying at St. Louis in 1820. He witnessed a deed in KY that made him sound related to two Benjamins. Also, one of this Benjamin’s daughters, Sarah, was married to a Swearingen. There were hundreds of John Rays and hundreds of Benjamin Rays in KY and MD at the time. I’d love to know more about what you have discovered about this Benjamin. I have an old group sheet from a serious and determined Ray researcher, now passed on, who has him only as married first to Mary– and second to Mary Rawlings. She has my John as a son by his first marriage, to Mary–.
She also has your William as having gone to Warren Co KY. Please write to me by email ruralplain@aol.com. I will be happy to share anything I have with you. I will be very grateful and happy to hear from you.
did you ever figure out your Benjamin?
