New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery

IMG_8252

New Providence Presbyterian Church is a lovely little church located on Highway 127 – about 5 miles from our home in Mercer County, Kentucky.  The original church, a log cabin eighteen by twenty feet, was built in 1785.  The McAfee Company, in the area in 1773, chose a location on the Salt River for settlement.  They returned to Bottetourt County, Virginia for their families, and on route were near starvation until Robert McAfee killed a deer which provided food for them.  When they built this church on their return it was named New Providence, to commemorate this act of divine providence in their behalf, and the many times they were delivered safely from dangers by the Indians.  The present building is the fourth, begun in 1861 and completed in 1864.

There are eight Revolutionary War soldiers buried in New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery:  James Cardwell, Robert Coleman, Isaac Coovert, Richard Homan, George McAfee, Samuel McAfee, John McGee and Thomas Smithey.

Having such a long history, the cemetery is old, and many stones are very worn – many hard to read.
